Duo handbook

Choosing and managing our hunter pets

The pet is the duo's front line: it holds enemies while the hunter deals damage and the priest supports it. A good roster needs more than a damage pet, especially when we take on elites.

Our starting recommendation is Cat, Carrion Bird and Turtle. If keeping three pets trained and levelled is awkward, begin with Cat and Turtle. The interactive pet guide compares the families, abilities and recorded tame candidates at your pet's level.

Use Get the pet ready for the job before an outing: choose questing, a harder elite or a dungeon, then enter the pet's actual level. It shows current rank checks, the next training checkpoint and a timeline through 60. Those client levels do not mean you already learned or trained the skills. The optional hunter-level field checks recorded tame ranges separately; it does not judge travel access or guarantee a spawn.

The three jobs

Job Starting choice Why it earns a slot
Fast questing and dungeon damage Cat A damage-oriented family; in dungeons the group's tank handles the enemies
Everyday duo tanking Carrion Bird Demoralizing Screech can reduce nearby enemies' melee attack power
Dangerous elites Turtle Shell Shield provides a short defensive recovery window

These are practical choices, not measured winners. The bird's advantage depends on the enemy and how well Screech works in the current game. The turtle trades damage for protection, and its cooldown does not make every elite manageable.

Bear is the main alternative when pulling several enemies matters more than Screech. Its health buffer and three-target Swipe are useful reasons to try it, but Swipe is not established as a reliable multi-target taunt.

Finding the first pets

A nearby Nightsaber is a natural early cat for this Night Elf priest's route. Later, a Starving Mountain Lion in Hillsbrad is a candidate worth inspecting. Reports of faster pet damage and attack-speed changes after retraining still need checking; do not travel solely on the promise of the best damage pet.

Fleshripper-family birds in Westfall are recorded Carrion Bird candidates. Check the family and location as well as the displayed name, since some recorded names are localised.

An Oasis Snapjaw in the Barrens is an early turtle candidate, but reaching it means a travel detour. Shell Shield unlocks at pet level 20; taming a younger turtle does not give you the defensive ability early.

You cannot tame a beast above the hunter's level. Recorded sightings are starting points, not a complete spawn guide or a guarantee of safe access. Check stable capacity and leave room for learning skills before committing every available slot.

Set the pet up for the job

For duo quests, keep the appropriate Growl rank available, disable Cower and leave enough Focus for Growl and the family ability you are relying on. Growl adds threat; do not treat it as a guaranteed forced-target taunt.

For dungeons with a dedicated tank, disable Growl. Keep area attacks away from crowd-controlled enemies and choose damage or useful group utility over tanking behaviour.

Bite, Claw and family skills compete for Focus. Turning every attack on automatically can leave too little for control or protection. Watch what actually gets used during a pull and adjust rather than assuming more enabled buttons always means better performance.

Keep backup pets levelled and their skills current. A pet that spent many levels in the stable should not be expected to tank a difficult elite immediately. Training, stamina, armour and suitable resistances can matter as much as the family name.

Match protection to the enemy

Carrion Bird: Screech's attack-power reduction is relevant to melee enemies nearby. Its exported damage targets one enemy; do not assume the debuff is an area taunt or that it reduces every type of damage.

Turtle: Shell Shield offers a short period of damage reduction and slows attacks. Use it as a recovery tool, then watch threat while damage output changes. The exact effect on damage per hit still needs testing.

Bear: a health buffer and repeated attacks against several targets may help on adds. Check whether the pet can hold them while the priest heals before treating it as dependable group control.

Roots, disarms and cast-time slows can be useful against particular enemies. They are different tools: a root does not stop an enemy already in melee range, and a cast-time slow is not an interrupt.

Choosing a dungeon utility pet

Start with the cat while learning the group and the encounters. Consider a utility family when its benefit addresses something the group needs.

A Tallstrider's Dust Cloud is an armour-reduction option for physical damage groups, but its stacking with the tank's debuffs remains unverified. Furious Howl supplies melee attack power rather than ranged attack power, so it is not automatically the right buff for this hunter/priest pairing.

For the MM or Survival drafts, compare a pet's total damage and utility with the petless talent option. The pet guide's tanking roster is primarily for the accepted BM duo build.

What the comparison can tell us

Family modifiers and readable abilities are useful information. Classic HP/armour estimates are kept in a collapsed optional reference in the interactive guide. They are not confirmed Forever pet stats and exclude gear, training and talents. More armour is not the same percentage reduction in incoming damage.

Hunter gear contributes to pet scaling, but the inheritance percentages remain unknown. Do not budget Fortitude or other player stat buffs as available pet bonuses. Inspiration and Divine Aegis interactions on the pet also need checking.

The most useful practical comparison is the same enemy with similarly levelled and trained pets: watch kill speed, incoming damage, the priest's mana use and whether enemies stay on the pet. Those observations should decide whether the bird, bear or turtle suits our actual pulls.
